File Mirrors

Bob Somers is happy to announce that his mic quality is much better thanks to ditching Vista RC1 and reinstalling XP. He also would like to announce that he’s fixed the problem with the ID3 tags and Windows Media Player should now digest the podcast just fine.

This week’s podcast features the following on-air personalities:

  • Bob Somers - SteamPodcast.com
  • Ramzy Bekheet - Steam Powered Forums
  • Thomas Arundel - Commercial Director of Introversion Software

The following news articles were discussed on the show:

Valve Announces Dynamic Weapons Pricing for Counter-Strike: Source

The cost of weapons and equipment that you purchase in Counter-Strike: Source are now based on an algorithm that calculates the global market demand for various weapons. As more people purchase a certain weapon, the price will rise and other weapons will become less expensive.

Starting October 11th, the prices you pay for weapons in Counter-Strike: Source will be updated every Monday based on the volume of purchases over the previous week.

This is a very interesting addition to CS:S. I always felt that the wide diversity of weapons types in CS:S was kind of pointless since most players only used 3 or 4 different weapons. However, this offers a direct incentive for players to choose a variety of different weapons and adapt their gameplay style accordingly.

However, I don’t think this dynamic pricing algorithm should apply to ALL items. For example, everyone is going to buy a suit/helmet combo for armor, so making it more expensive because everyone buys it doesn’t make much sense.

Many players are also saying that this feature will kill competitive play, but because this is a “free market economy”, in a sense, I don’t think that will happen. The market should naturally balance itself out over time.

We’ll see how this all plays out on October 11th. (full story)

Valve Releases Updates for Steam and the Source Engine

Valve released two updates this week, one for the Steam client and one for the multiplayer components of the Source Engine.

The Steam update fixed a bug where Steam windows would get moved around when you played a low resolution, full screen game and fixed a bug which gave users an “access denied” error when trying to play a media file.

The Source multiplayer update fixed a console command exploit that could be used to crash multiplayer servers and a bug that caused a game crash when swapping teams. (full story)

Sony’s Keynote at TGS Called a “Meltdown”, “Total Disaster”, and “Trainwreck”

Apparently Sony’s Ken Kutaragi made some big mistakes at his TGS keynote speech. A major problem stemmed from the translators who stumbled over common terms like “VoIP” and used a limited vocabulary that made Kutaragi sound like a repetative rambler. There where other things that weren’t up to snuff either:

  • Kutaragi never mentioned the word “console”, but he said the word “computer a lot. This could have been a translator problem, but honestly nobody wanted to hear about how great computers are, they wanted to hear about the PS3.
  • Kutaragi went on and on about how great the internet is, and how many possibilities it gives us. Some people thought he was leading up to talking about the PS3’s online capabilities, but alas nothing of importance was mentioned.
  • Very few visual aids were used, and reportedly roughly 80% of the speech was nothing but Kutaragi speaking.
  • At the end of the speech when the lights dimmed for the final video, everyone was waiting at the edge of their seat in hopes that they would get a glimpse of something exciting about the PS3. Instead, they were quickly disappointed by a video of one of the PS3’s least anticipated games, Afrika.

Sony Demos PS3 Interface at TGS

  • The PS3 interface is based on the cross media bar that should be familiar to PSP owners.
  • The PS3 will have a ‘firmware’ update system, much the same as the PSP. These updates will add more functionality to the PS3. Things such as the PS3 theme will also be tweaked and updated over time.
  • The PS3 will feature a media-station, enabling it to play movies, picture slideshows, listen to music, and more, all with full 1080p.
  • The PS3 will include a fully fledged web browser allowing you to view multiple websites, all being displayed in multiple windows.

PS3 Price Drop a Sign of Weakness?

Mike Wallace, a US-based analyst calls the new price for 20GB PlayStation 3 in Japan a “questionable business decision”, stating that Sony said it made the move “in response to consumer complaints about the console’s price.” Wallace paints the decision as window dressing at most.

Sony’s Ken Kutaragi said yesterday that in Japan, Sony would cut the price of the lower-end PS3 (with the 20GB hard drive) to less that 50,000 yen from an original 60,000 yen, or about $429 US from an original $515 US.

“This price cut is only on the 20GB version of the PS3 in Japan, which in our view is not significant given that the US is the key market for the PS3,” Wallace said in the memo. (full story)

Episode 2: Dry Week

File Mirrors

Bob Somers apologizes for the crappy quality of his mic on this week’s episode. He was running Windows Vista RC1 on the computer that recorded his audio, so he says you should blame it on Microsoft… :)

Bob also apologizes that the MP3’s still don’t play nice with Windows Media Player. There’s something about the way iTunes edits ID3 tags that doesn’t gel with WMP. However, iTunes, Winamp, and a lot of other media players will digest the MP3 just fine, so again he says you should blame it on Microsoft until he can figure out the problem.

The following news articles were discussed on the show:

Gamestop and EB Games Accepting Wii Orders Monday?
Rumor has it that Gamestop and EB Games will begin accepting preorders for the Nintendo Wii on Monday, September 18. According to the details:

  • The preorder will last for one week only or until limits are reached.
  • The downpayment of $50 can only be made in trade-in games and accessories. Cash, store credit, etc. can be used for the remaining balance.
  • You are NOT guaranteed to get a Wii on the release date, or any time before Christmas. First to preorder will be the first to get a Wii.

I don’t believe this. Maybe they will start taking preorders on Monday, but the terms of this preorder seem ridiculous. (full story)

Games Blamed for Montreal Shooting

Last Wednesday, 25 year old Kimveer Gill went on a rampage at Dawson College in Montreal. Thursday night, 2 of the people he shot were announced dead, while 6 were left in critical condition. After the shooting occurred, Kimveer Gill shot himself to death during a standoff with authorities. Once again, the media has blamed video games for the inspiration of a shooting.

The gunman was supposedly obsessed with violent videogames such as Grand Theft Auto, Postal 2: Share the Pain, JFK: Reloaded, and Super Columbine Massacre.

While I agree that games like Super Columbine Massacre are in extremely bad taste, I find it hard to believe that games were the sole reason that this guy did what he did. It’s very clear from his blog that he was seriously messed up, regardless of what games he played. These kind of incidents certainly don’t help the gaming industry’s reputation, though.(full story)

Sony Releases List of Playable Games for TGS 2006
This is a huge improvement over last year’s zero playable games at the Tokyo Game Show 2006. Among other titles, the Grand Turismo series will be shown off at TGS. (full story)

New Sony PSP to Get Digital Video Camera and 8 GB of Flash Memory?
The latest rumors have it that Sony will be integrating a digital video camera capable of streaming video to the PS3 via Wifi and then over the net to video chat rooms. Rumors also fly of Sony including either a 4GB or 8GB flash drive in the new PSP? Our verdict? We’ll wait and see, but if these rumors hold any water it will skyrocket the price of the PSP. Intel Goes Quad-Core with Kentsfield
While AMD spends its time in the drawing room designing their quad core CPU, Intel is rushing into the market by smashing together two Core 2 Duo cores onto a single chip to give us Kentsfield, the first quad core processor we’ve seen. Is this rush move a score for Intel or will AMD’s judicious slow-paced design process win out in the end? (full story)

XFX Announces Their Passively-Cooled GeForce 7950 GT
At only $300, this is quite a steal and will keep your rig quiet to boot. How much overclocking potential does this GPU have if it can get by without a single fan? We can’t wait to see the benchmarking stats on this card when it hits the market. (full story)

Stay tuned for the next few episodes… we’ve got some great interviews coming up with mod teams and game developers who release their games on Steam!

The following news articles were discussed on the show:

PopCap Games Come To Steam
PopCap Games has brought their collection to Steam. Games like Bejeweled, Zuma, and Chuzzle are now available for purchase and download on Steam. I think this is a big move for Steam into the arena of a content provider, not just a game distribution system. These aren’t big games, they’re casual games, so perhaps when you find Steam installed on your Grandma’s computer so that she can play Bejeweled you won’t be so surprised. (full story)

Team Fortress 2 To Be Bundled With HL2: Episode 2
Valve announced on Thursday that Team Fortress 2 and a new single player game called Portal will be bundled with Half-Life 2: Episode 2. Release is slated for the first part of next year. Interestingly, Valve is also developing Episode 2 for the PS3 and Xbox 360 as well… (full story)

Microsoft Releases XNA Game Studio Express (Beta)

XNA Game Studio Express enables individuals and small teams to more easily create video games using new, optimized cross-platform gaming libraries for Windows and Xbox 360. This beta release targets the development of games for Windows. The final version of XNA Game Studio Express will be available this holiday season and will enable development of games which target Windows and upon purchase of a XNA Creators Club subscription, the Xbox 360 as well.

As I understand it, the library requires Visual C# 2005 Express Edition to write your code. However it’s freely available from Microsoft.

Will this really work in terms of cross-platform development? Can I write my game in Windows and then just recompile it for the Xbox 360 without changing anything? This good be a real time saver for developers that are targeting multiple markets. (full story)

Blizzard Drops Hints About Starcraft 2

Sams said that Starcraft is his favorite game of all time and that Blizzard will certainly continue both the Starcraft and and Diablo series. He also said that he can’t say anything yet, but Blizzard will have a “major product announcement” in 2007 and is working on 3 unannounced titles at the moment. (full story)
